Abstract
We evaluated the effect of oral administration of 2 Meilax-Tablets (an antianxiety drug in the benzodiazepine group, each tablet containing 1mg of ethyl loflazepate) per day for 2 weeks in 75 patients with abnormal sensation in the throat. We estimated the effectiveness of the drug in 74 compliant patients. The respective rates of “very”,“moderate”,“slight” and “no” effectiveness were 32%, 35%, 13% and 20% after the first week, and 45%, 31%, 12% and 12% after the second week, and 46%, 24%, 10% and 20% at one week after the termination of treatment. Eight (11 %) of 75 patients, most of them eldrly, reported sleepiness as a side effect including one who discontinued the medication. In comparison with the effect of drugs in the benzodiazepine group, such as oxazolam, diazepam or alprazolam, studied previously, we observed that the effect of ethyl loflazepate lasted considerablely longer after termination of drug administration. It was concluded that ethyl loflazepate is a usuful drug for the relief of abnormal sensation in the throat.
