Abstract
CPDX-PR, a new broad spectrum cephalosporin, was administered orally to 106 patients with otolaryngological infections in doses of 200mg per day. The clinical and bacteriological efficacy of CPDX-PR upon otolaryngological infections were evaluated. The clinical effect was excellent in 21 cases, good in 57, fair in 21, and poor in 8. the overall clinical efficacy rate was 72.9 %. Bacteriological examination isolated 94 strains including Staph. aureus (28%), Staph. spp. (12%), Strept. spp. (14%) Haemophilus spp. (9%), Pseudomonas spp. (11%) and others (28%). The eradication rate was 77% in Staph. aureus, 100% in Staph. spp., 85% in Strept. spp. and 88% in Haemophilus spp. The overall eradication rate was 72%. Compared to cefaclor and cefixime, the antibacterial activity (MIC) of CPDX-PR in Staph. aureus, Staph. spp., Strept. spp., and Haemophilus spp. was superior. A side effect, slight abdominal uneasiness, was observed in one case (0.9%). In conclusion, CPDX-PR is a very safe and useful antibiotic for the treatment of otolaryngological infections.
