Abstract
A case of monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the temporal bone was reported. The patient was a 17-year-old female, who complained of left conductive hearing loss and stenosis of the left external ear canal. Fibrous dysplasia of the temporal bone was suspected from the findings of plain skull roentgeno grams, CT scan and bone-scintigraphy. Canalplasty was performed to correct the conductive hearing loss. Considerable improvement in hearing resulted. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia, which is characterized by proliferation of fibrous tissue with scattered trabeculae of immature bone. Fibrous dysplasis is a rare disease that is usually found in the long bones. Among other sites, monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the temporal bone is so rare that only 38 cases have been reported in the world. In this paper, the characteristics of this disease were discussed.
