The clinical usefulness of nebulizer treatment for chronic paranasal sinusitis in children (under 12 years of age) was investigated retrospectively. From April 1993 to May 1994, 245 patients with chronic paranasal sinusitis were treated for at least 3 months then followed. We gave them anti-inflammation drugs, cleaned their nasal cavities and used nebulizer treatment. The efficacy of treatment was assessed from the intranasal appearance and nasal X-ray films.
The intranasal findings after treatment for 3 months were improved in 64.9%, and X-ray films showed improvement in 49.8%.
We corrected these results with the number of times a week nebulizer treatment was given. There was a positive correlation between the frequency of nebulizer treatment and the response rate (p <0.01). Our data thus indicate that nebulizer treatment is useful in the treatment of children with chronic paranasal sinusitis.
We also analyzed statistically the differences in age and sex, nasal allergy complications, degree of clouding in sinus X-rays and sites of inflammation.
