In the combustion process of of automotive engines, gas temperature of post-flame reachs so high that the formation of nitric oxide become rapid reactions. By 1976 in the U.S.A., emission rate of NOx from light duty vehicle will be restricted less than 0.4g/mile, however one can not yet find a conventional technique to meet the 1976 emission standard of NOx.
As a practical applicatiion, exhaust gas recirculation and operation with far di-fferent air fuel ratio from stoichiometric ratio will be combined to decrease the NO emission. Usually, to decrease the NO emission the thermal efficiency goes down. Now, all combustion power plants have general difficulty to reduce the oxides of nitrogen, especially regarding the fuel economy.
