To investigate H_2 and ethanol production from biodiesel fuel (BDF) wastes containing glycerol by Enterobacter aerogenes NBRC 12010, pH-controlled batch cultures were performed using a bioelectrochemical reactor. In a non-bioelectrochemical condition (normal condition), the consumption of glycerol in BDF wastes stopped at about 60mM. On the other hand, 100mM glycerol in BDF wastes was almost completely consumed by using a bioelectrochemical condition after 80h. In addition, 5.9mmol electron was also produced. The electron production rate was dependent on the concentration of mediator (Thionine) from 0 to 2mM whereas little effect of the concentration of mediator was observed on the glycerol consumption. When culture pH was controlled at alkali, H_2 production decreased and formate accumulation was observed. The highest H_2 production was at an acidic pH of 6.0.
