Acetic acid prehydrolysis and subsequent hot alkaline washing of 2,4-dimethylphenol (DMP)-impregnated wood chip is a promising biorefinery process to produce hemicellulose-free pulp and DMP-introduced lignin. However, the delignification from wood is still insufficient. In this study, DMP-impregnated cedar chips were prehydrolyzed at 180°C for 2 hours with different acetic acid concentrations (0, 3, 6 and 9%) to obtain pulp and crude lignin (CL), which was recovered from black liquor. With increasing acetic acid concentration, DMP introduction to CL was promoted and the delignification was improved to give pulp with lower lignin content. Prehydrolysis with more than 3% acetic acid increased the molecular weight of CL, but the difference of thermogravimetric loss was hardly found.
