Separation of potassium from sugar cane molasses was carried out by the use of zeolite with ion exchange ability. It was shown from the continuous operation that the separation of potassium was possible by using ZSM-5. It was also found possible to recover the potassium from the ZSM-5 by contacting with nitric acid and to reuse the ZSM-5 for another run of potassium separation from the molasses. This separation technique is expected to be applied to a new utilization way of the molasses for providing potassium as a fertilizer and organic components as base materials to be converted to fuel on southern islands of Japan.
