In order to find out the luminance values to be provided in short tunnels, necessary to prevent the “dark frame” effect, the daylight penetrating through the entrance and the exit was measured and the influence of the penetrating daylight on the luminance contrast of the critical object located in artificially lit short tunnels was surveyed.
Based on the survey, and the result of Schreuder's experiments (1964), the luminance course to be provided was derived for each of the short tunnels with various lengths. Some examples of the luminance course derived were shown in a simplified form.
