Scale formation on the inner wall of preheater during primary hydrogenation of Victorian brown coal is troublesome for long term and stable operation of the plant. This paper discusses the preheater scales formed during the operation of a 0.1t/d process development unit and effects of temperature and catalysts on their formation.
