Temperature-variable dynamic viscoelastic measurement was applied to residues of a coking coal after extraction. Tanδ, which is the ratio of viscous modulus (G") to elastic modulus (G') and can be an useful parameter of fluidity of sample, gave the highest for all residues, whose fluidities were not observed by a Gieseler plastometer. Maximum tanδ decreased in the low extraction yield ranges, suggesting that low molecular weight components are essential to occur coal softening.
