Changes in coal aggregate structure were analyzed by temperature-variable XRD during heating and solvent swelling. The heat treatment below 400℃ intensified the diffraction around 20° for lower ranked coals of Beulah Zap and Wyodak, while the diffraction around 26° was weakened. In contrast, the heating above 450℃ intensified significantly the diffraction around 26° with rapid decrease in the peak intensity at 20°. The swelling of the coals were found enhanced by the heat treatment around 350℃, reflecting the change in the XRD patterns. The changes in coal aggregate structure are discussed based on the XRD profiles during heating and solvent swelling.
