Alkyl radical formation during heat treatment of coal is considered to be the key reaction of gas formation in the coal liquefaction reaction. In this study, the heat treatment of both coal and its model compounds with polycyclic aromatic compounds was studied in order to understand the behavior of alkyl groups. The result of the reaction of model compounds shows that most reactive substituent is methoxy group and that this reaction proceeds by the attack of hydrogen atom at ipso position on the aromatic ring. The result of the reaction of coal corresponds to that of model compounds very well.
