Catalytic cracking of 3-ring polycylcic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with hydrogen donors (naphthenes and paraffins) was investigated using residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) catalysts with high hydrogen transfer activity. 3-ring PAHs were partly hydrogenated by accepting hydrogen species released by hydrogen donors, and then converted to monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) by consecutive cracking of the saturated rings. The rate-determining step of the 3-ring conversion was the cracking of the saturated rings. These results suggest that the hydrogen distribution among the reactants and products in RFCC process is important for optimizing the heavy oil processing.
