We have proposed the so called degradative solvent extraction that dewaters and upgrade low rank coals and biomass wastes at around 350 °C. The smallest molecular weight fraction, Soluble, which is free from either water or mineral matters is expected to be a precursor of carbon materials. In this presentation we examined the effect of raw materials and solvents used on the properties of carbon fiber and activated carbon fiber prepared. A Thai lignite, Mae Moh, and a Thai rice straw were used as raw materials. 1-methylnaphthalene and a petroleum based solvent, A150, were used as solvents. It was found that hollow fiber can be prepared under controlled conditions. The carbon fiber was converted activated carbon fiber as one of final products, and the properties of the activated carbon were examined in detail.
