Three processes for the 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BD) production from lignin via gasification were proposed and simulated. The process capacity was 200 t-wet/d on a lignin basis. When each reaction preceded ideally, the process featuring the conversion of syngas to n-butene via dimethyl ether (DME) was the most promising. The 1,3-BD production process was improved through the pinch analysis and will have higher balance of payment than the power generation if the performance of the employed catalyst in the n-butene synthesis from DME can be enhanced.
