Liquefaction of Akabira coal (C 81.0 wt%, daf) with SnCl_2-KCl (3:2, molar ratio) under hydrogen or deuterium pressure (25 kg/cm^2) at 400℃ for 1 h was carried out. The products were divided into gas, hexane soluble (HS), hexane insoluble-benzene soluble (HI/BS), and benzene insolublepyridine soluble fractions (BI/PS), summation of their yields reaching to 90 % based on daf coal. The lightest fraction (25 %), HS fraction, was analyzed by 1^H-, 2^H-, and 13^C-NMR and pyrolysis GC/MS, these suggesting that deuterium was mainly introduced into terminal methyl groups of longer aliphatic hydrocarbons and α-methyl groups attached to aromatic moieties. On the basis of these results mechanism for this liquefaction reaction was briefly discussed.
