The chromatographic separation of fullerenes on coals of verying rank from brown coal to semi-anthracite has been carried out to determine the capability of the coals as a separation medium for purifying C_60 fullerrene. No correlation between separation performance and fraction of aromatic carbon to total carbon of coals was observed. Tetrahydrofuran extracted coals improved performance compared to toluene extracted coals, probably because the coal is expanded and this results in more favorable pore structure. These suggest that pore structure is more important than π-π electronic interactions between aromatic rings in the coal and fullerene. Bituminous coal, which is expected to have a high degree of pore structure in the mesopore range (2 to 50nm),appears to perform the best probably because this pore size is appropriate for fullerene separation.
