Inverse liquid chromatography (ILC) using a column packed with Argonne Premium coal was carried out. The capacity factors (the increment of the elution volume of probe relative to the elution volume of the carrier solvent) of various organic materials such as substituted-aromatic or-alcohol compounds were determined. Lower rank coals (Buelah-Zap and Illinois No. 6) showed the higher capacity factors for polar organics such as alcoholos, while high rank coal (Pocahontas No. 3) had relatively high capacity factors for non-polar organics such as carbon disulfide and n-hexane. In contrast, for Upper Freeport and Pittburgh No. 8 coals, the capacity factors of all organic materials used here were small. Chemical and physical factors on interactions between the coals and various organic materials are discussed.
