The Shimane Nature Museum of Mt. Sanbe, a museum of natural history, recognizes grassland plants in the neighboring field as the important assets representing the open air exhibition and therefore, performs mowing several times a year for management of the Kitanohara grassland. The objective of the present study was to pursue the optimal care methods for grassland plants by investigating the effects of mowing frequencies on flowering of grassland plants through monitoring the flowering status from 2004 to 2006.One 20 meters square plot was assigned to each site, followed by measuring the number of flowering stems in the plot as well as the vegetation height and coverage in sub-plots once a month. Vegetation heights reflect influences of mowing while there was a tendency towards maintaining lower stems in the plots subjected to frequent mowing. As regards flowering status, different mowing frequencies were found to be responsible for different numbers of flowering species and stems.
