Abstract

In Japan, the demand for outdoor recreation is onthe increase with a growing social recognition ofthe value of natural objects for outdoor recreation and for life environment. At the same time, development based on commercialism is regarded as one of the main causes for the destruction of nature nowunder way.
The authors surveyed a change of landscape caused by human by the application of aerial photographic interpretation for five years from 1962 to 1967 in the Hakone area of Fuji-Hakone-Izu national park.
The following characters have been disclosed by analyzing several factors affecting the change of landscape:
1. The change of landscape for the five years wasobserved in 13% of the whole Hakone area.
2. The site developed for the five years spreadover the Hakone area except the central cone andpart of the somma.
3. About 80% of the site developed in the Hakone area is the forest area which directly affects the scenic value of the national park.
4. As the natural park srstem in Japan in of so-called regional system, one of the problem inview of administration is nature conservation in private-owned land forming part of national parks.
