Abstract

This study is concerned with views from the Shinden-zukuri residence. The specific characters of 3 categories, buildings, garden, nature, which compose the views lead to the consequences of the views as follows.
1. The buildings and the garden are united as a ceremonial space in the Shinden-zukuri residence. And the construction of the corridors; Roh and Watadono, which connect main buildings such as Shinden and Tai, are continually open to surrounding views. The visivilities during viewing activities of the ceremonies are, therefore, continually open. Distant natural views from the residencial area are not considered to have been intently framed up from common scenery in Kyoto district.
2. Garden is constructed by means of the topographical condition and use of the natural things, and is, therefore, phisically a part of the nature. The outword views are appreciated as the extention of the garden sceneries, and has only secondary function as to the ornamental background for the ceremonies held in the garden.
3. There happened the division between city and agricultural area in terms of both scenic and social economical aspects in 9-12c. The ruling class couldnot recognize the differences of city and nature categoties, and also couldhot realize to grasp them synthetically.
