External components of Expressway Service areas’ design is executed in reference to the descriptions in the Design Specifications. Therefore, descriptions need to suffice all the aims of Specifications in order to sufficiently execute the detail designs of external components. The objective of this research is to clarify the degree of satisfaction level of descriptions concerning the external components design, including aesthetic aspects, of external components in the Design Specifications. The aims of Specifications are composed of three categories.First is on general and technical standards.Second is on detail designs.Third is on economic aspects. To achieve this objective, all the original descriptions are picked out from the Specifications.Picked out descriptions are analyzed.Through the analyses, descriptions about the general and technical standards are ample.Contrary to this, descriptions about the detail design method and about mutual relationships of components to which many existing reports attach importance, have been scarce. As a result, it was found that most of Design Specifications’ descriptions are focused on general and technical standards such as Parking lot’s size.Descriptions on aesthetic aspects are proper.Furthermore, detail descriptions on design method of the components and mutual relationships of components are not sufficiently contained.
