The formation mechanism of brittle and coarse intermetallic compounds in Al-4.5%Mg alloys containing Mn and Cr was studied. Giant intermetallic compounds CrAl7 precipitate as primary crystals. They have solid solubilities of Mn, Ti and Fe. The precipitation limit of the primary crystals is represented as:
%Mn+3.18%Cr=0.805 at 635°C
The precipitation temperature Tθ (°C) is:
Tθ=565.8+85.9(%Mn+3.18%Cr)
The influence of Mg on the primary precipitation line is found to be rather small by comparing the equilibrium diagrams of ternary Al-Mn-Cr and quarternary Al-Mg-Mn-Cr alloy systems.
