This paper describes an investigation of the gas flow inside the piston cavity of motored diesel engine using numerical simulation, hot wire anemometry and smoke wire method. Particular attention has been paid to the transfer of squish into the piston cavity and the flow pattern in the cylinder as the piston approaches from the bottom to the end of the compression stroke.
Experimental measurements were made in a cylinder cavity of simplified, geometry with the object of providing data for use in the theoretical modelling of gas flow. So good agreement was found between measured and calculated flow pattern.
