Passenger ships should accept disabled persons and appropriate safety measures should be taken to accept disabled persons. On passenger ships, there are some hazards due to ship motion for persons using a wheelchair such as uncontrollable running of wheelchair. It is necessary to evaluate various acceleration conditions in view of running of wheelchair to prevent uncontrollable running. In other words, a numerical simulation program on running of wheelchair under given acceleration conditions is necessary. The purpose of this paper is to provide basic numerical model for the simulation. We made a numerical model, by which torque for driving wheelchair can be calculated with a track of running and an acceleration condition as input data, under the assumption that the position of the center of gravity of the person driving a wheelchair was fixed to the wheelchair. Experiments on a slope using the special wheelchair, with which rotation and torque of rear wheels can be measured, were carried out to check the effectiveness of the numerical model. By comparing the calculated and measured data on torque, it is concluded that the numerical model can be used as a basis for the development of detailed numerical model for the simulation.
