Kobe University of Mercantile Marine and Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine will be respectively unified with other universities in October, 2003. Considering the influence which both universities work upon the society of Japan and the demands which the society conversely asks to the education of marine. We tried to describe the images of sailor in each period. At the same time we emphasized the meaning and its importance of seafares' education according to the historical background of both universities. The seafares' education itself has been changed depending on the changes of society. Therefore we tried to find out the ideas and objects in the education, at MEIJI in Japan. If those ideas and objects can be reconstructed and given the roles in present seafares' education once more, it will, we consider, help to succeed the seamanship. The seamanship itself should be a heart of the ideas and objects of seafares' education. Without the tradition of seamanship, We are convinced of that any modern maritime science cannot be useful for the seafares' education today.
