In Autumn 1980, we formed a plan for the Comprehensive Training System of all kinds of the methods of signalling stated in the International Code of Signals, including the domestic method of signalling and radiotelephony. In order to improve efficiency of the training, and also to meet the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, we have been carrying out the plan successively since the beginning of 1981 with the limited budget appropriated. The system is composed of: 1. Automatic transmitting device operated by a personal-computer for the reception training in the three kinds of signalling by hand-flags including the domestic method 2. Automatic transmitting device operated by the personal-computer or a tape recorder for the reception training of the Morse Code 3. Converter, changing flashing light to sound, by which the quality of the Morse Code transmitted by a signalling searchlight can be examined 4. Video component system 5. Color display operated by the personal-computer for the flag signalling 6. VHF radiotelephone simulation system consisting of thirty stations for students, one main station and two sub-main stations used by instructors Using those devices, we made a series of experiments on our first-year students during the second term in 1981-1982 and the following second term in 1982-1983, and obtained good results.
