It is well-known that the horizontal force of earth's magnetism deduces gradually near south magnetic pole, where it is difficult to keep the ship's course by the magnetic compass. As our Umitaka Maru had a chance of cruising near magnetic pole (Oct. 1964-Mar. 1965), we could observe the limits capable of using magnetic compasses. This report describes the limitation of use magnetic compasses with regard to the distance from magnetic pole.
