The influence of an addition of chromium on the thermal expansion coefficient of the alloys of iron, cobalt and nickel has been determined. It has been found that in the quaternary system of iron, cobalt, nickel and chromium, there are two valleys of the expansion coefficient, one of which originates in the compositions of invar or super-invar and another in the composition of stainless invar. These valleys come together at the section of 10 per cent of chromium; showing that stainless invar is closely connected with invar or super-invar and that the nickel and the cobalt contained in those alloys can be substituted almost lineary for each other.
