The advent of the thyristor in 1958 spurred a rapid growth in power electronics, including inverters requiring force-commutation of the thyristors, which have now been largely supplanted by GTOs and other self-commutated swltches. As history, an account of the early development of commutating circuits for voltage-source thyristor inverters is presented from the author's viewpoint as an engineer Involved in this work from the start.
