This study analyzes the change due to reconstruction project based on a total spatial restructuring of disaster-stricken villages and its impact on residents.We interviewed 24 residents in Genkai island, Fukuoka City. Clarified points are as follows: 1) The spatial change caused migration of people, significantly reshuffling the neighbor relations theretofore. In general, people who settled in public housing moved a longer distance. 2) Reasons for having chosen the public housing are mainly financial reasons and as well as existence or nonexistence of an heir. 3) Although the exterior space was grossly changed, there is no serious impact on daily lives. 4) However, pre-quake neighbor relations are left unrecovered because the common space to support opportunities for casual contacts between people was lost.
