Education from childhood is important for accurate response to sediment disasters. The ability to decipher topographic features, which are a prime cause of landslides, from topographic maps is a challenge for elementary and junior high school students. We have developed a sandbox (AR sandbox system) that utilizes augmented reality (AR) technology as a tool for learning topographic maps (contour lines) and topographic features. The system was implemented in two elementary schools in Wakayama Prefecture, and a questionnaire survey was conducted among students and teachers. The system developed in this study is portable and inexpensive and expected to be used for disaster education in educational and public institutions.
