In this study, consumer education was held among first-year university students, and then assessed. Working with Kofu city consumer affairs center, active learning was conducted in which the students would think of things they could do to look after the local senior citizens. The assessment was conducted by developing a rubric and asking the students to engage in a performance task. Four criteria of understanding the issue, critical thinking, decision-making ability, and expressiveness were set, with each criterion graded on a four-point scale. The comparison between the preventive and follow-up studies revealed that there was a change in the students’ attitude toward the senior citizens in their community.
