In order to clarify execution of home economics sewing practices, a mailed questionnaire survey was
conducted in March 2022 on 1,000 junior high school home economics teachers. 343 responses revealed
that teaching material and strategy of practices varied, with little difference by region or school size.
Through creative measures taken by the home economics teachers, sewing practices were often
adapted to the actual conditions of the students. Today, when there is no longer much need for home
sewing, sewing practices are still carried out in class so that students can acquire skills useful in daily life.
There were examples of teaching materials useful not only at home but also in school life, and targeted
not only at clothing but at all aspects of daily life. Practices in home economics incorporating various
material and handicrafts are considered to have the potential to contribute to a “fulfilling life” on top of
being useful in daily life.
