MOLIKPAQ is a steel-made mobile arctic structure operating year around in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. MOLIKPAQ was fabricated at IHI Aichi Works in 1984 and towed to the Beaufort Sea. The international joint project to conduct an extensive ice force measurements program was organized by the owner, Gulf Canada Resources Inc. Seven companies including IHI have joined the project. In early spring of 1986, MOLIKPAQ experienced many interactions with various ice features at Amauligak I-65 lot in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. The project could acquire many informations about ice-structure interactions. These informations are believed to contribute a better understanding of ice-structure interaction. However, these informations are still unpublished because of confidential agreement of the project.
On the other hand, IHI itself conducted model experiments on MOLIKPAQ in the ice tank. IHI proposed a method called DuPTEM (Dual Parameters Testing and Estimating Method) to estimate ice forces on a structure from model experiments in the ice tank. The DuPTEM was validated by the data acquired at MOLIKPAQ during the spring of 1986. However, since the bending failure was predominant in the model experiments, the comparison was limited to the first year ice interactions, where the bending failure was predominant. The results of comparison was quite promising, even though some extent of uncertainty is involved in both the measurements and the model experiments.
In the paper, the instrumentation on MOLIKPAQ and the error estimation on the data were briefly introduced, the procedure of DuPTEM was also briefly mentioned. Finally, the comparison between measured ice forces on MOLIKPAQ and the estimated ice forces from model experiments was given.
