Submodeling technique is used to achieve efficiency in finite element analysis when details are required in sub-regions of a large structure. Various implementations of this technique can be found in literature. Of these, Specified Boundary Conditions (SBC) methods are most popular, in which state variables (driven variables) such as stresses and displacements are transferred from global solution to determine the boundary response of the submodel. In this paper, a Recovery based Stress method is proposed, which is featured by using stresses obtained by the modified Superconvergent Patch Recovery (SPR) method as driven variables to achieve better accuracy and facilitate the computation of traction on submodel boundary. Application of this procedure in large deformation problem with hyperelastic materials is studied with considerations of some specific aspects such as changing of thickness and the configuration on which recovery is performed. To ensure to achieve satisfied results by submodeling analysis, jump of stress is used to define a quantity that indicates the accuracy of global solution and helps to determine proper submodel boundary. The proposed method is applied to two examples and compared with the displacement method. Numerical investigation shows that both these two methods give satisfied results, and the proposed method is better in accuracy.
