This study aimed to examine the relationship between the severity of gambling disorder and each factor of perfectionism in a multidimensional manner among those diagnosed with gambling disorder. We assessed 54 psychiatric participants diagnosed with gambling disorder by a psychiatrist, using the Multidimensional Perfectionism Cognition Inventory (MPCI) and the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients were calculated for the MPCI, participant characteristics (gambling frequency and debt), and the PGSI. Significant positive correlations between PGSI and the debt at the time of initial diagnosis, and the “pursuit of perfection” and “concern over mistakes,” which are considered maladaptive aspects of perfectionism, were shown. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis showed significant values for the standardized coefficients of debt at the time of initial diagnosis and “concern over mistakes.” The results of the present study depict the clinical picture of gambling disorders from the perspective of perfectionist cognition.
