Abstract

According to guidelines set by the Japanese Ministry of Education, the teaching of the educational science class method to 8th grade students should encompass learning the diversity of living things and evolution. In reality, the students can see only one example of each experiment and one observation in our science textbook. Because of that, we see some evidence that the students misunderstand the concepts of inheritance of acquired characteristics and survival of the fittest. Therefore, we created a teaching method of exposing the students to the concept of the effects of natural selection. This teaching material reproduced the environment visually. As a result, it was clear that our teaching material helps the middle school students understand natural selection easier. On the other hand, it was not easy to fix their lack of understanding inheritance of acquired characteristics.
