“Naikan” method cultivated by Ishin Yoshimoto, a religionist, is a unique religious psychotherapy in Japan. This method was adapted in correctional institutions about ten years ago as a technique of treatment, and it is said to be useful for an offender on his adjustment to the institution and social rehabilitation.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the psychological process of the “Naikan” method and to measure the changes in the self-attitude of subjects before and after the therapy by Stephenson’s Q-technique.

The main results obtained, were as follows: …………

1) A comparison of the change in self-attitude before and after the therapy was made between the therapy group and non-therapy group. The therapy group was significantly changed in self-attitude and the non-therapy group was almost not.

2) As a result of analysing psychological process during the therapy from ratings of the statement of the subject, the model process curve and the non-model curve were found.

3) Subjects who showed model curves, changed not only in their self-attitude, but also in their behavior in the institution, and subjects who showed non-model curves, hardly changed.
