Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the prevalence and characteristics of groups with co-occurring drug use disorder and alcohol use disorder (the Co-AL group) or gambling disorder (the Co-GA group) among inmates imprisoned for Stimulants Control Act violations. We examined 699 inmates admitted to prison in Japan for Stimulant Drug Control Law violations. The results revealed three main findings: 1) More than 30% of the total sample had co-occurrence of drug use disorder and other addictions. 2) The Co-AL group had a higher rate of experiencing repetitive overeating and deliberate self-harm behaviors, and a higher rate of complications involving mental illness compared with the other three groups. 3) While the Co-GA group exhibited fewer mental and physical problems, it contained a higher percentage of individuals who had committed other crimes compared with the other three groups.
