Abstract
Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most frequent gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor. Recently, therapeutic strategy for GIST has largely changed because of the appearance of effective therapy using molecular target drug imatinib. We reviewed cases diagnosed histologically with GIST and analyzed clinicopathological features.
Methods: Subjects were 26 persons with GIST undergoing surgical intervention between May 1999 and December 2007.
Results: Susceptible age was in the sixties, and sex difference was not found. Primary sites of tumors were almost stomach. In the cases preformed immunohistological examinations, KIT and/or CD34 were positive. The five-year survival rate of high risk group was 80.0% and it was 100% for other groups. There was no statistically significant difference. While 4-year recurrence-free survival rate was 41.7% and it was 100% for other groups. The prognosis of high risk group was significantly poor.
Conclusion: It was reconfirmed that adjuvant therapy was important to improve the prognosis for high risk group.
