Abstract
The current application of colors in such visual displays as signs, smokes, signals, markings, warning systems, instruments, and oth ers, was summarized and reviewed.
Colors are used; (i) as indispensable ways to convey various informations (direct application), and (ii) as important aids to get better legibility or visibility of markings (indirect application).
Some applications of color have been already specified on JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) as follows:
Colours of Aeronautical Lights, JIS W 7103,
Colours for Aeronautical Ground Lights, and Surface Marking, JIS W 8301,
General Code of Safety Colour, JIS Z 9101,
General Code of Fluorescent Safety Colour, JIS Z 9106,
and etc..
The results of several researches were rearranged from the viewpoint of distinguishability, attractiveness, visibility, and legibility of colors under careful differentiation between surface colors of objects and colored lights.
Various illuminating effects on appearance of color markings were also discussed.
