JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSome properties of visual perception are compared with the mechanical sensors, and a brief discussion is made with particular emphasis on their selecting filtering, patterning, and compensating character. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe current application of colors in such visual displays as signs, smokes, signals, markings, warning systems, instruments, and oth ers, was summarized and reviewed.
Colors are used; (i) as indispensable ways to convey various informations (direct application), and (ii) as important aids to get better legibility or visibility of markings (indirect application).
Some applications of color have been already specified on JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) as follows:
Colours of Aeronautical Lights, JIS W 7103,
Colours for Aeronautical Ground Lights, and Surface Marking, JIS W 8301,
General Code of Safety Colour, JIS Z 9101,
General Code of Fluorescent Safety Colour, JIS Z 9106,
and etc..
The results of several researches were rearranged from the viewpoint of distinguishability, attractiveness, visibility, and legibility of colors under careful differentiation between surface colors of objects and colored lights.

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSMany investigators have studied on form perception. The problems mentioned here were one of those specified under the broader area of form perception. A considerable practical significance in form perception concerns a perceptual process of target; visibility, legibility and readability.
Most types of visual signs present to an operator a considerable amount of extraneous information. His task frequently requires him to filter relevant from irrelevant stimulus before deciding on the appropriate response. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSFive experiments on motility of eyes were performed. (1) Choice reaction time of the fixative eye movements to the equi-distant neon lamps did not comfirm the Hick's law. RT to the vertical stimulus was longer than that to the horizontal one. (Fig. 2, 3, 4). (2) RT to second peripheral stimulus lit within 300msec was delayed than the first RT (Tab. 1). (3) Ss could not fixate the eyes without delay on a pair of alternatively lit neon lamps or Nixies, if they were lit for less than 300msec. The eye movement was the more displayed when the displayed numerals were to be read (Fig. 5, Tab. 2). (4) When more than 3.5 objects passed in front Ss per second in an experimental inspection task, Ss could not inspect them completely. (Tab. 4). (5) The frequency of saccadic movements of inspectors in a steel factory was always about 3.5 times per second at various conveyer speed of steel plate (Fig. 6). JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn the previous paper, we obtained the closed-loop frequcy characteristics G(jω). If G(jω) is given as follows:
G(jω)=a+bj (1)
then, the corresponding open-loop frequency characteristics H(jω) may be expressed by the following equation:
H(jω)=a(1-a)-b2+bj/(1-a)2+b2; (2)
provided that G(jω) is an unity feedback system.
From the experimental data, we obtained H(jω) by using the above equations (1) and (2). The following transfer functions were fitted to the data:
in most cases, H(S)=1/TS;
but in one case, H(S)=1.637(1+1/0.06652S+0.09565S);
generally, G(S)=1/1+TS
It was found that the sinusoidal response is quicker than the step response, but the latter is more stable than the former.
Theoretical formulae of H(jω) were derived. Then, correlations between the theoretical values and the experimental values of H(jω) were computed. Consequently, the correlations in the higher frequencies were smaller than those in the lower frequencies.
From the personality test, it was found that the less impulsive a man is, the more rapid and stable his response is.View full abstractDownload PDF (934K) -
