Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate longitudinally the influences of working models of parents and perceptions of the quality of friendships on support exchange in friendships among high school students. The participants were 242 first-year high school students who completed surveys of parents' child rearing attitudes and the quality of current parent-child relationships as indicators of working models of parents, the quality of friendships, and support exchange in friendships. The surveys were completed at both the beginning and the end of a school year. Covariance structure analyses revealed that at initial stages of friendships, both working models of parents and perceptions of the quality of friendships had significant influences on support exchange in friendships. On the other hand, at later stages, only perceptions of the quality of friendships displayed a significant association with support exchange in friendships.
