Abstract

With the start of the new Courses of Study, classes have been improved from new perspectives in the field of school education. In this context, “independent learning” needs a learning environment that creates a state in which learners are interested in learning and are immersed in the learning process. In recent years, the relationship between learning and emotions has been gaining more importance. This study focused on emotional engagement and developed a real-time emotion measurement system (RTEMS) that enables learners to communicate their emotions at any time in a learning situation. We used RTEMS to measure their emotions three times during a required class period of 41 students of a technical college from the second semester of their third year. After that, we hypothesized whether the emotions aroused during the class could predict learning attitudes, and verified the construct validity of this system. Path analysis revealed a relationship between the measured emotions and learning attitudes that was consistent with our hypothesis. In particular, it was shown that emotion during the time when the learner is working has a strong influence on the level of interest in the class.
