Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe nursing instructors' experience of dilemma in teaching the use of restraints. A mail survey was conducted in 2000 and 241 instructors in gerontological and fundamental nursing responded. Quantitative data showed that 64 % (71) of the 111 instructors, who taught the use of restraints, experienced dilemma. Analysis of the qualitative data from 71 instructors identified five categories and 18 subcategories regarding their dilemma. "Uncertainty regarding content, procedure, and outcome of the restraint education" was the most frequent category. The results suggest that it is extremely important to develop adequate content and strategies for teaching regarding the use of restraints for the generic education in nursing.
