Little works have been done on the fungal flora of the human body, though they are fundamentally important. Haley (1950) reported mycological findings of 216 cases of normal ears and Singer, Freeman, Hoffert, Keys, Mitchell and Hardy (1952) publicized the results from 1, 366 cases of ears. As for the nose, no literature on this subject has been offered at present. Of fungi in the throat and mouth only Candida has often been studied by not a few researchers in several countries, but other fungi in these regions have never been clarified as yet.
This paper deals with studies on the fungal flora in the normal ear, nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchus, which were performed by the author and his co-workers in Japan, Formasa and South Korea.
