A mandiblar impacted third molar with exposure of the dental root at the inferior border of the mandible is rare. We describe a case in which the dental root was palpable at the inferior border of the mandible. The patient was a 63-year-old woman with discomfort at the right side of the mandible. A right mandibular impacted third molar was found on examination at a dental clinic in 1992. On presentation to our department on December 21, 1994, radiography showed the presence of a cyst at the crown of the third molar with protrusion of about 1 /4 of the root apex from the lower edge of the mandible. Extraction of the impacted third molar with cystectomy was performed by an intraoral aproach. She has been well since the operation.
