Current status of extracurricular sports activity programs in colleges and universities in the U. S. has been studied upon collecting questionnaire completed and returned by 105 chairmen of physical education departments in major colleges and universities. The major findinges included followings: 1. Intramural sports program for men and women has been well developed, being administered by staff in physical education department. 2. Intercollegiate athletic program is highly organized and more prevalently provided for students than extramural sports. The administrative policies on the latter are less developed and quite inconsistent among various institutions. 3. The evaluation of intercollegiate athletic program among physical educators was widely split between support and disapproval. Upon obtaining above results, the following conclusive statements were made, i. e., all of the extracurricular sports programs will be better developed, if it is administered by the department of physical education. This is especially so when development of participation oriented sports for all students is to be expected. At the same time, the educational values of intercollegiate athletic program should be re-evaluated.
